| Ireland's leading composer of Celtic/Classical
music, Shaun Davey, has recently been nominated for a Antoinette
Perry (Tony) AwardŽ, in New York for his score to James Joyce's
'The Dead' which has been taking Broadway by storm since the
begining of the year. The Tony Awards, which take place in New
York on Sunday June 4th, are theater's most coveted awards and
are presented annually by the American TheatreWing for distinguished
achievement in the professional theatre. Shaun has been working
as a composer since 1982 and his other compositions include
The Brendan Voyage, Granuaile, The Pilgrim and The Relief of
Derry Symphony, the 'Concerto for Two Harps ' and Gulliver,
A Choral Symphony, many of which have been highly acclaimed
and are regularly performed at major concert halls around the
world. |

| Shaun also composed the music for a number of
stageplays such as 'Fair Maid Of The West', 'A Winter's Tale',
King Lear', 'Troilus And Cressida', 'The Tempest', 'The Silver
Tassie', 'Observe The Sons Of Ulster Marching Towards The Somme',
'The Well Of The Saints', 'Prayers Of Sherkin', 'The Steward
Of Christendom'. More recent theatre scores include: 'The Lion,The
Witch And The Wardrobe' (RST). His Film and television credits
include 'Catchpenny Twist' (BBC), 'Pentecost' (BBC), 'The Hanging
Gale' (BBC), 'Ballykissangel' (BBC 1995-97), 'Loving' (BBC),
Trevor Nunn's 'Twelfth Night' (Renaissance/Fineline), 'Waking
Ned Devine' (Tomboy/Fox Searchlight). Shaun's most recent TV/film
score was, 'David Copperfield' (Hallmark). Film documentary
scores include Tim Severin's 'The Spice Islands Voyage' and
'In Search Of Moby Dick' |

James Joyce's The Dead opened on January 11,
2000 (closed April 16, 2000) at the Belasco Theatre. 112 performances
(and 32 previews) Marni Nixon, Sally Ann Howes The Story A new
musical play based on a story by Irish author James Joyce (1882-1941).
"The Dead" originally appeared in Joyce's collection The Dubliners.
It is set at the Christmas party of Gabriel Conroy's music-loving
aunts, where three generations gather each year for a holiday
feast. This year, a guest's song awakens a memory for Gabriel's
wife and revives a long-buried passion.
History The show; It moved to Broadway's Belasco Theatre
after a completely sold-out, extended Off Broadway run at Playwrights
Horizons. It opened on January 11, 2000 and was the first musical
opening on Broadway of the 21st century. Steven Bogardus and
Faith Prince performed the roles of Gabriel and Greta Conroy
towards the end of the run. |
