"The
Piper's Call from Liam O'Flynn is one of this year's outstanding
Celtic albums from a man regarded as Ireland's leading uilleann
piper."
Ken Stewart, Billboard Magazine
February 1999 sees the North American
release of 'The Piper's Call', the latest recording by Liam O'Flynn.
For 'The Piper's Call' Liam has brought together some of Ireland's
top musicians including Arty McGlynn (guitar), Steve Cooney
(guitar), Rod McVey (keyboards) and Liam Bradley (percussion),
who provide a perfect setting for Liam's piping on tracks such as
'Sliabh Na mBan'(The Women's Mountain), 'The Humours
of Kiltyclogher', 'Miss Admiral Gordon's Strathspey'
and 'The Humours of Carrigaholt Set' amongst others.
Liam is also joined on this recording
by good friends and virtuoso musicians, Sean Keane whose
superb fiddle playing can be heard on a number of tracks and on
'The Gold Ring' his playing is particularly memorable.
On 'The Drunken Landlady / McKenna's Reels' Liam and Sean
are joined by another old friend Matt Molloy. In 1997 Liam
was asked to compose a piece of music for the inauguration of Ireland's
President Mary McAleese 'An Droichead' (The Bridge), which
is the theme of her presidency. For the recording of this track
Liam is joined by the incomparable Mark Knopfler on guitar
which serves to make this track one of the highlights of the album.
Top Galician piper Carlos Núñez joins Liam
for the two Galician tracks, 'Muiñeira de Poio/Muiñeira
de Ourense', and 'Marcha de Breixo/Marcha de Lousame'.
Liam also combines with The Irish Chamber Orchestra for a beautiful
version of 'Bean Dubh a Ghleanna' (The Dark woman of the Glen),
arranged and conducted by Micheál O'Súilleabháin.
The Piper's Call CD and cassette
will be available from all major outlets in the US with special
in-store programs in Tower Records, Borders, and Musicland.
From the beginning of this project
Liam has collaborated with Emmy award winning director Philip
King and Nuala O'Connor of Hummingbird Productions to
capture Liam's background and the making of this music, on film.
The results are so visually stunning that the resulting film is
to be released on video. 'The Piper's Call' video includes all the
music from The Piper's Call CD, as well as a special bonus track
'Poul Pejsen'. The video also has a 30mins section of interviews
with Liam, Liam O'Flynn Snr., Seamus Heaney, Mark Knopfler, Carlos
Núñez during which Liam also performs a number of
solo piping pieces. This 90 min video provides a visual insight
to a master piper and his trade.
During the month of March a
specially edited version of this video will be aired on over 140
Public Television stations throughout the US
(please check with your local
station for transmission details).
