Treehouse
Diner first came together in 1994 when Dublin based singer/songwriter
Ger Mallen, along with Brian Hickey, bass guitarist, recorded a demo
tape on a friend's four-track machine. The tape, the first of three
demos, showed enough promise to attract the attention of two record
companies.
After a gig in Newton Pery in Limerick, Brian and
Ger discovered vocalist Fiona Kiely and persuaded her to join the
lineup. The trio have since been joined by guitarist Mike Moriarty
and drummer Gerry Hanley. The band's third demo 'perfectly Happy'
caught the attention of John Cook, MD of Tara music and after seeing
them play live he offered them a single and album deal on the T-Rock
label (a Tara Music subsidiary, set up specially to cater for the
groups needs). The following month they went into Windmill Lane
Studios to record their top three single 'Brilliant Sunshine'
and their first full album 'First
Sign'.
The group also captured the attention of P.J. O'Riordan
and Alan McEvoy of Curtain Call -The Cranberries business management
company, and following the success of their debut single 'Brilliant
Sunshine' O'Riordan and McEvoy formed Artwest to oversee the development
of their newly acquired artists.
Since the release of the 'First Sign' album
the band have been busy touring the length and breath of Ireland
as well as finding time to write new material. Memorable gigs have
included Midnight At The Olympia and the Millstreet Music
Fair where Tom Robinson was so impressed with the band that
he invited them on stage later that evening to perform one of his
hits 'War Baby' with himself and his band.
The 'First Sign" album contains
Twelve tracks. Of these, three have been released as singles,
'Brilliant Sunshine' which reached No. 3 in the Irish Charts,
was only kept from the No. 1 spot by Blur and Michael Jackson. The
second single 'Whatever Happened to Lucy' reached No. 14
in the National Airplay charts. The third single 'Perfectly Happy'
also received very strong airplay throughout Ireland. The Album
was recorded in the prestigious Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin
and was produced by the highly acclaimed producer/engineer Andrew
Boland who has worked with artists such as Kate, Bush, Wet Wet Wet,
Christy Moore, Mary Black and on the Riverdance and Lord Of The
Dance albums.
