Voices From The Merry Cemetery (formely
Traditional All Stars)
*In his day Liam O'Flynn snr. was a noted traditional musician. At
his funeral in Naas in late 2008 a unique band of musicians, led by
his son the piper Liam óg O' Flynn (Planxty), came together
to perform in his honour. Amongst those who played were Sean Keane
(The Chieftains), composer Shaun Davey (The Brendan Voyage),
singer Rita Connolly (Granuaile), cellist-piper-composer Neil
Martin, guitarist Arty McGlynn, keyboard specialist Rod
McVey (the Van Morrison band), and West Kerry box player and sean-nós
singer Seamus Begley.
Apart from individual collaborations, this group of musical celebrities
have never before performed together. Yet such was the quality of
the music played on the day of Liam Snr's funeral, that they have
decided to share the craft of music-making again in a brief series
of very special concerts.
Their combined talents and repertoire are certain to generate memorable
and emotional occasions when they perform at Glór, Ennis (2nd
May) and St Peters' Church, Drogheda Arts Festival (3rd May). They
will be joined by percussionist Noel Eccles (Moving Hearts
and Riverdance); Music and song in the hands of the masters. Liam
O Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers) will join the lineup for the concert
on May 4th in the Waterfront Hall, Belfast.
