prize in the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards 'Musician of the Year', goes
to Liam OFlynn from Kildare who has long been regarded as
one of Irelands most influential uilleann pipers. Other Award
winner's include young musician of the year, Mayos Fiachna
OMongain, with fiddler Paddy Cronin designated for the Hall
of Fame (Gradam Saoil), Jim McGrath as composer of the year and
Dara Ban Mac Donnachadha as singer of the year and Ciaran Mac Mathuna
receives the Gradam na gCeoltoiri Award for his media role in spotlighting
traditional Irish Music.
Kildare man, Liam has been a member of some of the most influential
traditional music groups including Planxty and has also performed
specially commissioned orchestral suites such as Shaun Davey's The
Brendan Voyage, The Pilgrim and The Relief of Derry Symphony to
national and international acclaim. He is acknowledged as Ireland's
foremost exponent of the uilleann pipes and has brought the music
of the pipes to a world-wide audience.
The TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards, considered to be the foremost recognition
given to traditional Irish musicians, will take place on Easter
Sunday, April 8, at the Cork Opera House to mark the 10th year of
the much-coveted and prestigious prizes. Along with Liam special
guests for the night will include Paul Brady, Danu, Sean Keane,
Jackie Daly, West Ocean String Quartet agus go leor eile.
